Making your own way here? Keep up to date with Fraser Island ferry times

Making the most of your time on K’gari means beginning your journey right, and turning up to the ferry terminal only to find you’ve (literally) missed the boat is an instant downer. We’ve all been there but now it’s easier than ever to keep up to date with all the Fraser Island ferry times. If you’re making your own way to Fraser Island you’ll need to familiarise yourself with the ferries and barges that ply the route between the mainland and the island.

There are two jumping off points from the mainland, River Heads and Inskip Point. Which one you head to will depend on where you need to land on the island.

Fraser Island Barges operate two services on different schedules, both out of River Heads, every day of the week. River Heads is the closest ferry port to Hervey Bay, just 30km south.  The Fraser Venture runs three services every day to Wanggoolba Creek in the south west of the island (journey time 30 minutes) and Kingfisher Bay Ferry runs five more services to the Kingfisher Bay Resort (journey time 50 minutes) just a little way north of Wanggoolba.

The route to Wanggoolba Creek is subject to change and cancellation, depending on whether or not there is a very low tide.

If you need to land further south then catch a ferry from Inskip Point, which is 15km north of Rainbow Beach. The crossing time from here is just 10 minutes and the landing point is Hook Point  on the southern tip of the island. All services are operated by Manta Ray Fraser Island Barges.

The current timetable stands as follows (though it is important to check for updates!) and the sites listed below will provide the most up to date information. Always double check them before you start your journey.

River Heads to Wanggoolba: 8.30am, 10.15am, 4.00pm

River Heads to Kingfisher Bay: 6.45am, 9.00am, 12.30pm, 3.30pm, 6.45pm

Two ferries operate between Inskip Point to Hook Point from 6:00am to 5:15pm, approximately every 30 minutes.
