But before getting to Fraser Island (K’gari), you’ll need to consider your budget and how much the trip will cost. While it’s definitely possible to see the island on a budget, there are quite a few things to keep in mind when accounting for a trip. Here are some of the various expenses involved in visiting this remarkable island.

Transportation Costs

Before getting to K’gari Fraser Island, you have to think about what will get you there! If you want to drive yourself, you must have a 4WD as the highway here is the beach. Renting a 4WD usually costs around $350-400 a day, with some companies having a minimum time you can rent them for. Make sure you check what insurance is included as you may want to take out some of your own to ensure you’re covered for any mishaps.

You will then typically get the ferry or barge from the mainland to the island – the most common departure points are Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach. Ferry tickets are priced differently for pedestrians, vehicles, and camping equipment. The cost varies depending on the time of year, the provider, and the type of vehicle or equipment being transported. It’s recommended to book in advance to secure the best price (and availability).

Manta Ray, which operates the ferry from Rainbow Beach (Inskip Point), currently charges $130 return for a 4WD vehicle and all passengers. SeaLink ferry prices for the crossing from River Heads (near Hervey Bay) vary based on size of the 4WD vehicle, peak and off-peak crossings, and number of passengers. A peak return for a normal 4WD is $230; off-peak is $205. Passengers are an additional $7 per person. This information is subject to change, so check with providers for the most up-to-date information. Transportation typically tends to be the biggest expense for travelers visiting the island without a tour.

If you’re doing a tour, you should consider where they pick-up and drop-off as this can drastically increase your costs of getting to Fraser Island (K’gari). Most companies depart from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay so check public transport options to these before booking. We offer departures from Noosa to make sure our tours are accessible to everyone!

Accommodation Options

K’gari Fraser Island offers a range of accommodation options to suit various budgets and preferences. From luxurious resorts to budget-friendly camping grounds, there is something for everyone here! Resort stays obviously come at a higher price, while camping fees are more affordable. There are also lots of individually owned holiday rentals which give you more of a feel for island life. Our secluded self-contained beach units at the Haven currently range in price from $250-$390 a night based on how many people are staying and season.

It’s worth noting that camping on the island requires additional permits, which you’ll need to purchase in advance – there may be restrictions on the number of permits issued per camping area, so book this before you arrive. Camping permits are currently $7 per person, per night. There is also a family rate available, which includes two adults and three to six children for $28. Check prices in advance when booking online.

Food and Dining

As an island destination, the cost of food and dining on K’gari Fraser Island may be slightly higher compared to the mainland. The island has a limited number of restaurants and cafes, which are mainly located near the resorts. Alternatively, visitors can bring their own food and utilize the barbecue facilities available in many camping areas. This option will reduce your expenses significantly! If you’re planning on cooking your own meals, stock up on food and groceries on the mainland before getting to Fraser Island (K’gari) to keep costs low. Alcoholic drinks are also more expensive on the island, so make a run to the bottle shop before arriving if you’re planning on enjoying a few bevs on the island.

Tour Packages and Activities

Exploring K’gari Fraser Island is one for the bucket list, and participating in guided tours is a popular choice for many visitors. These tours vary in duration, activities included, and group sizes. The cost of tour packages will depend on the operator, the type of tour, and the number of participants. Some common activities include guided walks, four-wheel driving, whale watching (during the season), and visits to iconic landmarks such as Lake McKenzie and the Maheno Shipwreck.

Guided tours have the benefit of a tour guide (obviously!), who can take you to some of the most special and unique places around the island. You’ll see and experience so much more with a local guide. When you factor in the various expenses of ferry crossings, accommodation, permits, and food, it may be easier in the end to book a tour package. This is a great choice for solo travelers wanting to visit Fraser Island! Ferry costs, vehicle permits, fuel, and private accommodation can really add up when you’re not splitting costs across a group.

Additional Expenses

There are several additional expenses to consider when getting to K’gari Fraser Island. These include permits such vehicle permits for driving on the island’s sandy tracks, fuel costs (as there are no service stations on the island), and camping equipment rentals. A vehicle permit to drive on the beach is currently $55.90 for one month or less, although this is subject to change. Don’t forget fuel costs to get to the ferry embarkation points, too! Inskip Point is approximately 100km from Noosa, the closest big town near the main M1 route along the coast. You’ll want to research and budget for these costs in advance to ensure a hassle-free experience when getting to K’gari Fraser Island.
